Not quite in iPhone territory yet, but gaining considerable steam, Android apps have reached the 20,000 available mark today. While that may not sound like a lot for those used to the iPhone’s 100,000, Android did it over the course of a year and, more interestingly, it hit 20,000 after just hitting 10,000 back in September. The total still falls well short of the 65,000 that the Apple App Store sold in the first year.

For those smart folks that don’t blindly accept random numbers, the totals come from AndroidLib who tracks all paid and free published apps. 38 percent of the apps are paid, while the remainder are free for all.

November was particularly strong for new Android apps with 3,544 joining the club. The release of Droid on November 6 couldn’t have hurt, but isn’t thought to have been capable of playing a big role in such a short slice of time.

Assuming that solid devices continue to crawl out of Android’s stables, and that recent rumors of the Google Nexus One hold true, 2010 should be a big year for new Android apps. [via Electronista]
