AmazonBasics: Electronics for Cheap
By Jared NewmanAmazon’s stepping up its game as a producer of electronics, launching its own line of cables and blank media under the name AmazonBasics. The idea is to sell electronics for less money than the competition, under a brand name that’s recognizable thanks to Amazon’s status as a major online retailer. So far, you can get cables (USB, HDMI, network and the like) and blank media (CDs and DVDs), but the company says additional accessories and items will be added in the coming months. As a comparison, Amazon’s 100 pack of blank DVDs costs about $20, which is a few dollars cheaper than a Memorex spindle. When it comes to HDMI, though, there’s no way Amazon’s competing with 1 cent.
