The dust has cleared and the mad retail dash of Black Friday and Cyber Monday are officially over. Hopefully you made out as well as Amazon. According to numbers by Experian Hitwise, the retail giant topped the list of most visited sites on Cyber Monday and enjoyed a 44 percent increase over last year’s visit numbers. The numbers aren’t that surprising given Amazon’s position as huge Internet marketplace. Amazon has actually led the way on Cyber Monday since ‘06. This year, Walmart held the two spot and Target and Best Buy followed up in three and four.

As a whole, the Hitwise numbers indicate that visits to the top 500 Internet retailers were down by 9 percent year-over-year. Overall weekend numbers, though, were positive for online retail.  Traffic and sales on Black Friday saw a significant increase–9 percent more traffic according to Hitwise and 24.1 percent more sales according to Coremetrics.

The rest of the holiday season remains to be seen. [via Washington Post]
