Amazon Eyes In-Book Ads With Patent Application
By Jared Newman
If you’ve got the means to drop $489 on a Kindle DX, the added cost of an e-book probably won’t hurt the wallet. At the same time, these affluent users are fertile ground for advertising, which c0uld explain why Amazon wants to patent in-book ads for its Kindle e-reader. The ads would be context-sensitive, so if a writer describes the sizzle of a hand-formed hamburger patty or the cool of a milkshake, a McDonald’s ad would greet the reader on the next page. Obviously, no one wants this for a book paid in full, but maybe a little advertising can supplement a larger library. Or perhaps this idea is better left on the shelf. [Slashdot via CrunchGear]
