Acer Aspire One Dual Boots Android

Acer’s Aspire netbook is taking on a feature that’s typically reserved for pricier PCs such as the Dell Latitude Z: In addition to Windows, the Acer Aspire One AOD250 has a lighter, Linux-based operating system, in this case Android, that you can boot quickly and optionally. This comes in handy as an “always-on” feature, letting you access e-mail and the Web even as Windows is still starting up. Techtree reports that the Android operating system boots up in seconds — I’d expect it to get you on the net with smartphone-like speed — and has limited functionality, though the boundaries of what you can do aren’t clear. So this isn’t the dedicated Android laptop we’d been led to believe Acer was working on, but it’s still pretty cool.

Aside from its dual-boot feature, the AOD250 is a standard-issue netbook. It’s got the 10.1-inch display, a 1.66 GHz Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive and a built-in Webcam. Sadly, there’s no wireless-N, just 801.22b/g. But it does have a six-cell battery, getting five or six hours of life on a charge. And fashionistas will delight in the availability of four different colors. Pricing’s reasonable too, with the Acer Aspire One AOD250 on sale in the United States for $350.
