10 Countries Send Letter to Google Requesting Better Privacy Measures
By Chris Weiss
A collection of nations has expressed some serious concerns about Google’s privacy measures. Officials from Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom sent a letter to Google explaining concerns that it has not done enough to protect privacy. Some of the specific items cited include the well-publicized Google Buzz privacy failures and procedures used when archiving images from Google StreetView.
Part of the letter reads: “We are increasingly concerned that, too often, the privacy rights of the world’s citizens are being forgotten as Google rolls out new technological applications. Privacy cannot be sidelined in the rush to introduce new technologies to online audiences around the world.” It went on to ask Google to add more privacy features to its services.
Google didn’t provide an official response. Today, the company will be holding a presentation today based around requests it has received from foreign governments. We’ll see if it addresses this particular letter. [via WSJ]
